The regular season has come and passed, and the Bulloch Academy doubles team of Kate Anna Akins and Mary Catherine Spigener is still unbeaten.
Monday afternoon, the pair blazed through the GISA Region 2-AA tournament to secure a No. 1 seed at the state tournament in Macon.
“It’s been exciting for us all year,” said Akins. “This is our senior season, so we were determined to go out on a high note. We beat the girls from Frederica both times that we played them. They usually dominate in tennis, so that was a big boost for us and for the rest of the team.”
The duo has been paired together for the Lady Gators in each of the last three years, and their communication and teamwork shows in their ability to dominate opponents on the court.
“I’ve been playing for three years and Kate Anna has been with me all the way,” said Spigener. “I think that our playing styles really compliment each other. Each of our strengths plays off of the other and being paired together for so long has helped us to communicate and work together easily.”
Akins and Spigener won’t be the only ones making the trip to Macon as five other girls and two players from the boys team have also qualified for the state tournament.
