METTER — The Metter Lady Tigers (9-5, 7-1 Region 3-AA) required only one inning to get the 15 runs they needed to put the Josey Eagles away after three as Adrienne Lanier and Lexi Allen combined for eight strikeouts and a three-inning no hitter to get a 15-0 region win Thursday.
Eagle starting pitcher Chareva Miles only allowed one hit to Metter, but eight walks and eight passed balls contributed to the 15-run first. Relief pitcher Kamesha Turner faced six batters in the first and finally got JHS out of the inning when third baseman Tequila Lovett made consecutive catches on line drives down the third base line.
Turner, the only Lady Eagle base runner of the game, reached in the second on a Metter fielding error.
Lanier, Ashley McLamb, Lindsey Marsh, Amy Nagel, Brooke Williams and Amanda Anderson all crossed the plate twice for the Tigers in the first inning. McLamb finished the game 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. Metter stole five bases in the contest.
Freshman reliever Allen struck out the side in the third to secure the no hitter.
“(Our) pitching I thought was good,” said MHS coach Don Mims. “We threw strikes. Against a team that’s struggling a little bit, that’s what you want to do.”
At the end of the game, in a show of sportsmanship, both teams gathered on the mound and showed their appreciation for each other joining in a cheer.
“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” said Mims about the display of sportsmanship from both teams.
The Tigers return to play against Southeast Bulloch Thursday at 5 p.m. in Brooklet, and the game will have regional implications for both squads.
With the Monday-night Yellow Jacket loss to Screven County, both Metter and SEB are at the top of the region with one loss apiece. The Tigers will have to face one of the top pitchers in the state in Lady Yellow Jacket Megan Barnwell, who struck out 10 in the 7-2 SEB win the first time these two teams met this season.
“We faced them once here,” said Nagel, Metter’s catcher and leading hitter, “and we didn’t do to well. Maybe we’ll have a better showing this next time.”
With the win against Metter, SEB currently holds the tie-breaker in the Region 3-AA standings, so with a lot of season left, Thursday’s game will place the winner solidly in first place.
