Local Roundup: SEB sweeps mid-week meet

    BROOKLET — With Saturday’s annual Plankenhorn Invitational looming, Southeast Bulloch picked up two big wins Wednesday in a five-team meet.
    The Yellow Jackets racked up 188 points, outscoring Effingham County (154), Portal (76) Savannah Christian (50) and Calvary Day (2).
    The Lady Yellow Jackets got 142 points, edging out Effingham County’s 141. Calvary Day scored 96, Savannah Christian 53 and Portal 49.
    In the boys’ meet, Josh McKeehan won the shot put for SEB with a throw of 43 feet, 101⁄2 inches. Ryan Dawson won the discus (122-10) and Robbie Spivey was second (121-6) for the Jackets.
    Tharon Davis won the long jump (20-5) and the triple jump (39-11). Portal’s Steven Cox was second in the triple and Justin Raymond was second in the long.
    In the high jump, Portal’s Raymond was first and SEB’s Nathan Davis was second (5-10). Southeast’s Kale Reed won the pole vault at 7-foot.
    In the 400m relay, SEB’s Arsenio and Greg Wright, Davis and Gerald Williams ran 43.47 to win the event. Portal’s Joseph Ware, Chase Sheffield Raymond and Johnny Raymond were second.
    In the 1600m relay, Arsenio and Greg Wright, Pat White and DeArious Odum were first (3:44). Portal’s Justin Raymond, Travis Budgett, Casey Ware and Sheffield were second.
    In the 400m, Arsenio Wright was first (53.16) and Odum was second (54.24) for SEB. Greg Wright won the 100m with a 10.75 and the 200m with a 22.03. Portal’s Sheffield came in second in the 200m.
    In the 110m hurdles, Walter Davis ran a 16.09 to win. Nathan Davis ran a 2;16 in the 800m for first place.
    In the 300m hurdles, Devin Spells was second for Portal.
    In the girls’ competition, Sarah Herndon won the shot put with a toss of 32-11. She also won the discus for SEB at 99-7. Brittany Key was second for SEB in the shot (27-7). Portal’s Dominique Allen was third in the shot while Megan Anderson was third in the discus.
    In the high jump, Rebekah Harville tied for second for SEB with a leap of 4-8. Candace McElveen was first in the pole vault (6-6) and Victoria Bowen was second (6-0) in the same event.
    Portal’s Jaliesia Coleman was second in the 100m and Katherine Mincey won the 300m hurdles.
    Southeast was second in the 400m with a time of 53.69. Candace Pierce, Tia McCullom, Asha Rawls and Alesha Mercer ran the event.
    Sarah Burgess won the 1600m with a time of 6:27 for SEB. Mercer was second in the 200m with a 26.31.
    The 1600m relay team of Rawls, Mercer, McCullom and Jennifer Puckett were second for SEB at 4:43.
    Both Portal and Southeast Bulloch will participate at Saturday’s Plankenhorn Invitational. The meet starts at 10 a.m.

Greenbrier tops SHS
    EVANS — Greenbrier scored five early runs off Statesboro starter Zack Taylor, then cruised to a 11-2 win over Statesboro Wednesday.
    Trey Robinson and Tony Hill both came on in relief but the Blue Devils (6-9, 2-4 Region 3-AAAA) couldn’t muster enough offense against GHS starter Nolan Belcher.
    Statesboro will return home Tuesday to face Liberty County at 5:30 p.m. at Mill Creek.

Screven picks up two region wins
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County tennis teams knocked off Swainsboro on Wednesday to remain undefeated in Region 3-AA play. Neither team lost a set during the match
    The Lady Gamecocks (13-4, 5-0) got singles wins from Kate Blackburn (6-0, 6-1), Katheryn Wells (6-0, 6-0), and Evan Blackburn (6-0, 6-0). Carter MIlls and Missy Zeagler (6-0, 6-0) won in doubles play, as did Kelsey Forehand and Sydney Weaver (6-0, 6-0).
    The boys’ team (11-6, 5-0) got singles victories from Eric Boddiford (6-0, 6-0) Jim Freeman (6-0, 6-1) and Hunter Sommers (6-0, 6-0). In doubles action, Eddie Waters and Murphy Frankhouser won 6-1, 6-4 and Zachary Parker and Grant Tripplett won 6-3, 6-3.
    On Tuesday, SCHS traveled to Augusta to face Josey.
    Blackburn (8-1), Wells (8-0) and Mills (8-0) all registered singles win for the girls’ teams. Boddiford, Freeman and Sommers all won 8-0 in singles play as well.
    
Westfield knocks off BA soccer
    Senior Will Powell knocked in three goals in Bulloch Academy’s 8-3 loss to Westfield School Tuesday at Gator Alley.
    The Gators (0-4) travel to Savannah Friday to battle Memorial Day School at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. First kick is slated for 4 p.m.
