Georgia Southern Golf and Forest Heights Country Club are teaming up to host the Georgia Southern Pro-Am Golf Tournament, Monday, April 9, at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro with proceeds to benefit the GSU Golf program.
All are invited to this event with teams consisting of four golfers and a professional playing in the scramble format. A limited number of spaces are available.
Participants will receive: Green fee and cart, a Georgia Southern golf shirt, an opportunity to meet the GSU golf team, refreshments, cocktail hour, dinner after play, raffle gifts and awards for the winning teams.

Eagles sweep S.C. State
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Georgia Southern softball team swept South Carolina State in a midweek double header Thursday. The Eagles improve to 13-17 as they head into Southern Conference play this weekend at Chattanooga.
Freshman Lindsey Hopkins reached on an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Heather Smith in the first inning to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead in the 4-1 Game One win.
In the third, back-to-back RBI singles from seniors Maria Laurato and Katie Smith added to the GSU advantage. Laurato eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Michelle Beasley to make the score 4-0.
Junior Melissa Laliberte fanned eight Bulldog batters and gave up only one hit for the win and improves to 4-6.
Georgia Southern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as the first three batters reached base and scored in Game Two’s 12-1 win. Hopkins, freshman Nina Iduate and Heather Smith each singled and came around to score.
The Eagles scored five runs in the fifth. Junior Aubrey Thweatt scored on an Elizabeth Branan double to left center and Laurato hit a two-RBI single to center field that drove in Hopkins and Iduate. GSU added two more runs on a passed ball and wild pitch.
Georgia Southern added to the 8-1 lead in the sixth on back-to-back hits from Hopkins and Iduate and another multi-RBI hit from Laurato.
Hopkins went 4-for-4 in game two and Iduate tallied three hits. Laurato led the Eagles with four RBI.
Senior A.J. Street improves to 3-4 on the season for GSU. She struck out six batters in five innings of relief for the win.
Former soccer star to conduct symposium
Former English soccer star Steve Heighway will conduct a coaching symposium for area coaches at Georgia Southern University on Wednesday.
Heighway played for the Liverpool Football Club during the 1970s. He is now the director of the Liverpool Academy, a state-of-the-art training facility that provides instruction to some of the most talented young players in England.
The symposium at Georgia Southern will feature two separate clinics: The University Team Clinic — Heighway will give a demonstration of coaching at the collegiate and elite levels from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Georgia Southern soccer stadium. He will spend an hour with the men’s team and an hour with the women’s team. Due to NCAA rules, this clinic is for observation only.
The Coaching Education Clinic — Heighway will give a demonstration of coaching at the high school and select player levels from 7:30 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. at Paulson Stadium. During this session, he will
interact with coaches and answers questions regarding coaching and player development.
In the event of rain, both clinics will be conducted in Hanner Fieldhouse.
There is no fee for either clinic, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. Any coach who does not register in
advance may not be admitted. The general public will be allowed to watch both of the clinics from the bleachers.

SEB tennis split with Swainsboro
The Southeast Bulloch boys tennis team beat Swainsboro 3-2 on Thursday.
Toby Sanders (6-3, 6-1) and Jon Martin (7-5, 6-1) won in singles matches for SEB (5-4, 1-0). Sam Dickerson and Brooks Edenfield (6-3, 6-2) clinched the win with a doubles victory.
The Lady Yellow Jackets (6-2-1, 0-1) dropped their match 3-0 with two games suspended due to darkness.
Southeast travels to Metter on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. start.
Lady Gamecocks top Vidalia
The Screven County girls soccer team picked up a 4-1 at Vidalia on Thursday.
Haley Iten scored twice for SCHS (9-3, 4-1) with Nicole Miller and Randi Brown adding a goal each. Megan McGuire also tabbed an assist in the win.
Screven match today with Laney will be forfeited by LHS and SCHS will return to action Monday hosting MHS at 5:30 p.m.
Gators slam EBA
Both Bulloch Academy tennis teams picked up wins at Edmund Burke Academy on Thursday.
The Lady Gators (4-2) won 4-1 with Kacie Lanier (6-4, 5-7, 7-6) Kate Anna Akins (6-1, 6-2) and Mary Catherine Spigener (6-1, 6-2) picking up singles wins. Bonnie Hannah and Morgan Anderson won their doubles match 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The boys teams (5-1) won 5-0 with Jordan Walker (4-6, 6-3, 7-6), Paul Son (6-4, 6-1) and Rob Mallard (6-1, 6-3) winning in singles play. William Spigener and Jeremiah Masters won their doubles match 7-5, 6-3 as did Matt Williamson and Brandon Walker who won 6-0, 6-0.
Bulloch returns to the courts to host David Emanuel Academy Monday at 4 p.m.
Richmond Hill hands CHS loss
The Claxton boys tennis team (8-1, 4-0) fell 3-2 to Richmond Hill on Thursday.
Thomas Thigpen won in singles action 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (retired) and Justin Stewart won 6-1, 6-0.
Claxton will host Statesboro Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.

Screven County’s tennis match with Josey was cancelled Thursday, but will be rescheduled.
BA girls second in six-team meet
MACON — The Bulloch Academy girls’ track team tied for second in a six-team meet Wednesday at Class AAA Stratford Academy.
The Class AA Lady Gators tallied 98 points to tie with Tattnall Square Academy. Host Stratford won the meet with 179 points and Deerfield-Windsor was third with 76 points.
The BA boys’ team notched 79 points for fourth place. Stratford won the meet with while Deerfield-Windsor was second and Tattnall Square was third.
In the girls’ meet, Bulloch had seven seconds, five thirds and three fourths.
Second-place finishers were Kelcie Jacobs (1600 and 800m runs), Kaylee Dennard (100m hurdles), Susanna McKee (400m dash), Heaven Hinton (300m hurdles) and Rachel Gilbert (200m dash) and the 4x400m relay team (McKee, Hinton, Gilbert and Kaylee Lanier). Third-place efforts were turned in by Hinton (discus, 100m hurdles), Abi Foy (shot put), Whitney Hinson (high jump) and the 4x100m relay team of McKee, Hinton, Gilbert and Lanier.
In the boys’ meet, Bulloch had one first, four seconds, two third and five fourths.
Jordan Walker won the 800m run. Second-place finishers were Jeremiah Masters (pole vault), Dartavious Brown (300m hurdles), Ethan Lovett (110m hurdles) and Ben Stephens (800m run). Brown was third in the 100m hurdles and the 4x400m relay team of Brown, Stephens, Lovett and Troy Poulin also took third.
Bulloch hosts a seven-team meet Wednesday at Gator Alley.
BA JV girls win meet
The Bulloch Academy girls’ junior track team, all 11 of them, tallied 101 points to win a six-team meet at Gator Alley Thursday.
The Lady Gators had two firsts, six seconds and one third to squeeze by Region 2-AA rival Trinity Christian School by just 3.5 points. Brentwood and South Effingham Middle School tied for third with 66 points.
In the boys’ meet, the Gators held a slim one-point lead over South Effingham (111-110) going into the final event, the 4x400m relay. The Mustangs placed first and fourth while Bulloch took only second. SEMS won the meet with 124 points and Bulloch settled for second with 119. Robert Toombs was third with 80.
In the girls’ meet, first-place winners for Bulloch were Sally Marie Futch (discus) and Emily Morgan (800m run). Second-place efforts were turned in by Morgan (1600m run), Taylor Collins (shot put, discus), Marianna Peebles (long jump), Lauren Dennard (800m run) and the 4x400m relay team of Morgan, Collins, Peebles and Madeline Manack. Manack was third in the 400m dash.
The Bulloch boys won big in three events, took second in five and placed third in three. Ellis Lane won the long jump while John Harden took the top spot in the 100m hurdles and Kelly Williams claimed the 800m run. Second-place efforts were turned in by Lane (100m dash, 200m dash), Harden (long jump), Phillip Brunson (1600m run), Codi Johnson (discus) and the 4x400m relay team of Lane, Harden, Williams and Will Johnson. Third-place finishers were Will Johnson (1600m run), Win Lee (400m dash) and the 4x100m relay team of Williams, Harden, Lane and Jonathan Lumpkin.
Bulloch Academy travels to Sandersville next Thursday for a multi-team meet at Brentwood.
Subway local track meet to be held April 14
The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department and Subway will host a local track meet for ages seven to 14 on Saturday, April 14, at the new Georgia Southern University track and field complex. Check-in will begin at 7:45 a.m. on the day of the meet, followed by a 9 a.m. start.
The meet is free for all participants and will consist of track and field events including the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter run, 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run, standing long jump, running long jump, high jump, softball throw and shot put.
Those wanting to participate can pre-register at the Honey Bowen Building on Fair Road or by logging on to www.bullochrec.com by Monday, April 9. Late registration will be taken at the event starting one hour prior to and up to 15 minutes before the 9 a.m. start time. The first 250 children to register will receive a free t-shirt at check-in.
Students who are currently participating in a school track program are not eligible to participate in the Subway Local Track Meet.
For those who qualify, a district track meet will take place on April 28 in Swainsboro, and a state track meet will be held May 11-12 in Carrollton.

A softball and half-rubber ball tournament will be held Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at the Screven County Recreation Complex to benefit Relay for Life.
Live entertainment, a dunking booth and concessions will all be part of the event which begins at 7 p.m. on Friday. All proceeds will go to Relay for Life. Admission is free but donations will be gladly accepted.

The meet will begin at 10 a.m. at the Southeast Bulloch High School track complex.
