Bulloch Academy scored fives runs in the bottom of the sixth, completing a 7-5 comeback win over Memorial Day School Tuesday.
Trailing 5-2 in the last half of the sixth, Clay Anderson drew a bases loaded walk and Walker Blitch plated a run with fielder’s choice to make the score 5-4. With a 3-2 count and two outs, Thmoas Brunson then doubled to right center to give BA (6-11, 3-4) the lead for good.
Taylor Burke pitched a complete game, striking out five and hitting an RBI double from the plate. Matt Simons was also 2-for-3 in the win.
Bulloch Academy will play its final home game Friday at 4 p.m., hosting Edmund Burke Academy.
SHS falls to Evans
Statesboro lost a tough region matchup with rival Evans on Monday in Augusta, 6-2.
The Blue Devils (9-7) scored first in the contest, played under overcast skies and chilly temperatures. In the top of the of the 4th with one out, Tony Hill drew a walk. Then first baseman Luke Connell and third baseman Landry Jones hit back to back singles to load the bases. Second Baseman Daniel Whitt plated Hill with an RBI fielder’s choice, but the Blue Devils would then leave the bases loaded.
Evans came back in the bottom of the fourth and plated four runs. After pitcher Forrest Robertson got two quick outs, Evans loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Then back to back 2-run singles put the Knights on top for good.
Statesboro came right back with a run in the top of the fifth, but were unable to scratch out any more runs. The Blue Devils had five hits on the night. Luke Connell had two hits, and rightfielder Trent Lewis had a double. Robertson took the loss for the Devils on the mound.
Statesboro returns to action today, hosting No. 1 ranked Greenbrier of Augusta at 5:30 p.m.at the Mill Creek Complex.
Panthers skim JCHS
Portal beat Jenkins County 3-2 Tuesday night in Millen in baseball.
Brett Rivers got the win and Brandon Mock the save for PHS (7-10, 5-2). Jordan Clark and Derek Finch were both 1-for-3 and Clayton Williams went 1-for-1.
The Panthers host Savannah Country Day at 5 p.m. on Friday.
BA State qualifiers
Eleven Bulloch Academy tennis players qualified for the GISA state tournament on Tuesday at the Regio 2-AA tournament at Forest Heights Country Club.
Kacie Lanier and Kate Anna Akins won the girls double championship by beating their teammates Sarah and Betsy Woodrum.
Mary Catherine Spigener qualified by finishing fourth in the girls singles competition and Jordan Walker and Paul Son advanced in the boys singles competition.
In boys doubles action, William Spigener and Rob Mallard finished third to qualify while Jeremiah Masters and Matt Williamson filled the final doubles spot.
All the aforementioned will travel to Tifton to compete in the state tournament Tuesday.
Blue Devils lose to GHS
The Statesboro scoccer team fell 4-2 to No. 2 Greenbrier in Region 3-AAAA action Tuesday.
Thomas Eisenhart gave SHS (5-7-3, 3-5) a 1-0 lead at halftime off a goal from Jack Kimes. The Blue Devils would then give up the lead 15 minutes into the second half and trail 2-1 until Erick Quiterio’s goal tied the game at 2 with six minutes to play.
Greenbrier scored two goals over the final five minutes for the final margin.
Statesboro will travel to either Glynn Academy or are County on Thursday for the first round of the Region 3-AAAA tournament.
SEB Tennis honors seniors
Southeast Bulloch honored its seniors Tuesday night. Toby Sanders, Jon Martin, Laura Bennett and Sara Ervin were recognized before the Yellow Jackets defeated Jefferson County by scores of 5-0 and 5-0.
The Lady Yellow Jackets (8-5-1, 2-3) got singles wins from Shelby Forehand (6-1, 6-1), Victoria Herndon (6-0, 6-1) and Jordan Sherrod (8-1). In doubles, Sarah Burkhart and Kaitlin Brannen won 6-2, 6-1 while the seniors Bennett and Ervin won 6-1, 6-2.
The boys team (9-5, 5-0) got singles wins fom Sanders (6-0, 6-0, Martin (6-0, 6-0) and Aaron Groover (forfeit). In doubles, Brooks Edenfield and Sam Dickerson won 6-1, 6-1while Will Jones and William Groover won 6-0, 6-1.
Southeast travels to Augusta today to face Josey at the Fleming Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
Lady Blue Devils get fourth seed
The Statesboro girls soccer team lost 7-0 Tuesday at Greenbrier to finish the regular season 2-6 in Region 3-AAAA.
Christa Mitchell had 27 saves in the loss for SHS (3-8-1) which will travel to Glynn Academy on Thursday at 5 p.m. for the first round of the region tournament.
Screven tennis splits with SCD
The Screven County boys tennis team defeated Savannah Country Day 5-0 Tuesday in Savannah.
Eric Boddiford (6-1, 6-1), Kyle Reynolds (6-2, 6-1) and Bo Evans (4-6, 6-3, 10-8) won in singles play. Adrian Graham and Jim Freeman (6-2, 6-0) picked up a doubles win, as did Zachary Parker and Hunter Sommers (6-1, 6-0).
The Lady Gamecocks (12-4) dropped their match 5-0.
Both squads will resume play Thursday at Southeast Bulloch at 4 p.m.
Trinity beats Open Bible
The Trinity Christian softball team defeated Open Bible 15-0 in three innings on Monday.
Lauren Kibler went 3-for-3 with seven RBI, a grand slam and a three-run home run. Megan Paige (4-1) got the win on the mound for TCS (4-4), pitching a two-hit shutout.
Gracie Quattlebaum went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Anna Beth Havner went 2-for-2.
The Lions return to action on Thursday facing Brunswick at Southeast Bulloch High School.
