Bulloch Academy’s 2006-07 junior varsity basketball program got mixed reviews on its opening night Monday.
The Lady Gators, minus starting point guard Rachel Gilbert, were overmatched by David Emanuel Academy and took a 40-14 loss. But the BA boys avenged the defeat by downing the Eagles 42-27.
In the girls’ game, Sally Marie Futch and Taylor Collins added four points each for Bulloch. DEA’s Jessica Wimberly pumped in 20 while Amy Wells added 12. DEA improves to 3-0 while BA goes to 0-1.
In the boys’ game, Bulloch’s Brandon Walker and Walker Blitch netted 10 points each to lead the Gators. Ryan Sparks paced the Eagles with 10. DEA falls to 1-1 while BA improves to 1-0.
Both BA JV squads will be in action again Thursday afternoon, hosting Citizens Christian Academy.

Statesboro and Southeast Bulloch High School swimmers participated in the Golden Isles Invitational on Saturday in Brunswick. The SHS boys took sixth, while the girls placed 11th. The SEB girls finished 12th in a field of 16 teams.
For SHS, Daniel Bradley pulled in the most points with a sixth place finish in the 50-meter freestyle and seventh in the 100-m free. Also swimming to a seventh place finish was Stephen Harvey in the 200-m free. Harvey took ninth in the 100-m backstroke, while Cam Sutcliff placed eighth in the 500-m free. The 200-m free relay team of Sutcliff, Jack O’Malley, Harvey, and Bradley placed fifth.
For the SHS girls, Julie Stalcup swam to a 10th-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley, Erin Irby placed 11th in the 500-m free, and Leanne Dannacher took 12th in the 100-meter fly.
Esther Schmidt was the pace setter for SEB, taking ninth in the 500 free and setting school records in both the 500-m free and 100-m back.
Both teams will compete in Savannah this Saturday in the Chatham County Invitational at the Chatham Aquatic Center at 10am.

The SEB Football Banquet will take place on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Both varsity and junior varsity teams will be honored.

A trip to California highlights the 2007 Georgia Southern softball schedule released this week in an announcement by head coach Natalie Poole.
The schedule includes multiple trips to Atlanta, a tournament in Sacramento, Calif., and a home doubleheader against fellow 2006 Athens Regional participant Florida State.
GSU will face six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament including Florida A&M, FSU, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Iowa and Kansas.
The Eagles travel to Atlanta twice in the month of February for matchups at Georgia Tech (Feb. 10) and Georgia State (Feb. 20). Georgia Southern opens play at home versus Florida State (Feb. 13) before hosting the GSU Invitational Tournament Feb. 16-18 and the GSU Eagle Classic Feb. 23-25.
Following the Eagle Classic, Georgia Southern takes to the road for almost a month. The Eagles will return to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic March 2-4 and then head to Jacksonville for a twinbill at North Florida. The squad will head across the country in the middle of March, visiting St. Mary’s in California (March 14) and participating in the Capitol Classic hosted by Sacramento State (March 16-18).
The Lady Eagles will begin SoCon play with a weekend series at Chattanooga March 24-25 and will return to Eagle Field March 31-April 1 for a three-game league battle with Furman.
On April 4, GSU will travel to Athens for a doubleheader at Georgia. Other non-conference games include trips to Kennesaw State (April 11) and Florida A&M (April 19).
The Eagles resume SoCon action as they travel to Charleston, S.C. , April 6-7 to play College of Charleston and Burlington, N.C. , to visit Elon. The team welcomes UNC Greensboro to Eagle Field April 21-22 before hitting the road for a final trip to Cullowhee, N.C., to take on Western Carolina (April 28-29). Georgia Southern wraps up the season at home, hosting Appalachian State May 5-6.
The 2007 Southern Conference tournament will be held in Greensboro, N.C., May 9-12.
