Local Roundup: BA boys headed to Elite Eight

    The Bulloch Academy boy's basketball team picked up a 44-30 victory over the Heritage Hawks Thursday in the first round of the GISA Class AA state tournament at Middle Georgia College in Cochran. With the win, BA advances to the Elite Eight and will play Westminster Christian Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at MGC.
    The Gators (14-13) took a 14-8 lead at the 6:45 mark in the second quarter on a 3-point play by James Conner. The Hawks pulled within one at 14-13 with 5:50 left in the half, but BA answered with an 11-0 run. The Gators were up 26-17 at the half, and Jordan Walker hit consecutive baskets to open the third quarter and stretch BA's lead to 30-17.
    Wil Hall led the Gators with eight points, while Will Powell, Walker and Conner had seven apiece.
Claxton boy’s
tennis wins
    The Claxton boy's tennis team picked up a 3-2 win at Southeast Bulloch Thursday to improve to 2-0-1 on the year. Justin Stewart, Thomas Thigpen and Blake Cradey won all three singles matches for the Tigers.
    SEB's No. 1 doubles (Brooks Edenfield and Will Jones, 6-4, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles (Brandon Sellers and William Groover, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4) both won their matches.
    Both teams play again Tuesday at 4 p.m. as Claxton travels to Metter and SEB visits Toombs County.

tops Claxton
    The Southeast Bulloch girl's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 win over Claxton (0-3) Thursday in Brooklet. Singles winners for SEB were: Shelby Forehand (6-0, 6-1), Shannon Martin (6-0, 6-0) and Victoria Herndon (8-0). The doubles teams of Laura  Bennett and Kaitlin Brannen also won (6-1, 6-1), as did Sara Ervin and Candice Tillman (6-0, 6-4).
    Both teams play again Tuesday at 4 p.m. as Claxton travels to Metter and SEB visits Toombs County.
