Local Roundup: Purvis earns 4th SoCon honor

    For the fourth time this season, Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis has been named SoCon Softball Pitcher of the Week.
    The senior delivered a perfect game to open the week, recording her second no-hitter in a five-day span. Purvis and the Eagles open league play on Saturday afternoon at UNCG.
    She joins an exclusive club of three pitchers to earn eight or more career SoCon Pitcher of the Week awards, joining Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk (2007-10) and Beth Alexander (1999-02) who each received nine awards.
    Purvis opened the week in perfect fashion, tossing her third career perfect game and the fifth no-hitter overall as an Eagle.
    She struck out nine batters as she moved into 11th place in NCAA history for career perfect games.

Wheeler County tops Panthers
    ALAMO — The Portal Panthers (5-3) fell 8-1 to Wheeler County on Tuesday on the road.
    Wheeler plated four runs in the first and four in the sixth to seal the win.
    Portal's Brett Howell came in relief to throw 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits, and struck out five.
    The Panthers return to action in Millen on Friday when they take on Jenkins County.

Gamecocks top Westside
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks (6-1) extended their winning streak to six and knocked off Westside 7-5 on Tuesday.
    With the teams tied 4-4 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Dixon drove in a pair of runs with a single, and Dixon scored on an RBI double by Aaron Brower.
    Carl Heindel allowed a run in 5.1 innings of work, and Bobby Hodges earned the win with one earned run allowed in 1.2 innings of work.
    Shadon Kemp (2-for-3) hit a three-run homer and Brower (2-for-4) and Brandon Whatley (3-for-4, RBI) each had a multi-hit day.
    Screven County takes on Swainsboro on the road next Wednesday.

Portal golf matches St. Vincents
    The Portal Lady Panthers took on St. Vincents Academy of Savannah on Tuesday at the Georgia Southern University golf course, and both teams shot a 104 in the nine-hole match.
    Faith Reddick's 45 and Kiely Anderson's 59 led the way for the Lady Panthers for a combined score of 104.

SCHS sweeps Harlem
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks swept Harlem in a pair of Region 3-AA tennis matches Tuesday at home.
    The boys (2-6, 1-1 Region 3-AA) got wins from Jacob Lariscy (6-0, 6-1), Ryan Bazemore (6-1, 6-0) and Mason Oglesby (6-0, 6-0). Doubles pairs Zachary Weaver and James Woods (6-2, 6-2) and Zachary Anderson and Matthew Thomas (6-0, 6-0) were also winners.
    The Lady Gamecocks (7-1, 2-0) got wins from Rebekah Woods (6-2, 6-1), Mallorie Boswell (6-0, 6-0) and Jancey Durrence (6-1, 6-0).
    Harlem forfeited both doubles matches.
    Screven will travel to Augusta on Tuesday to face Laney.

SHS sweeps Bradwell Institute
    The Statesboro Blue Devils  swept Bradwell Institute in a pair of tennis matches on Monday.
    No. 1 singles players Amber Jones for the girls and Todd Emory for the boys each won without dropping a game.
