       Georgia Southern's softball team returns to Southern Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Western Carolina at Eagle Field.
    The weekend series begins with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today. Afterward, GSU will host a free clinic for boys and girls up to age 12.
    The series concludes with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
    The Eagles (14-10, 3-0) lead the SoCon following last weekend’s three-game sweep over Samford on the road. This weekend’s games open league play for Western Carolina (9-13).
    GSU's Marie Fogle is batting .436 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in in the season’s first 24 games. Mackenzie Williams is hitting .338 with a .500 slugging percentage, while earning 16 walks. Kourtny Thomas paces the Eagles' power hitters with five home runs and 16 RBIs.
    The Eagles' pitching staff is paced by Sarah Purvis, who tossed her first career no-hitter last week against LaSalle. Purvis (7-5, 2.14 earned-run average) struck out 16 and has 90 total strikeouts.
    GSU pitcher Brooke Red has a perfect 5-0 record with a 0.76 ERA.
