Georgia Southern got an unexpected weekday off Wednesday when a game scheduled in Macon against Mercer was rained out, but with the week bookended by four-game sets, the Eagles will still get plenty of work.
A three-team, round-robin tournament will take place at J.I. Clements Stadium as GSU plays hosts to the Ohio Bobcats (2-4) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1-6).
The Eagles (7-1) kept busy during the rainout, as the game was cancelled before the bus left for Macon.
“We worked in the cages,” GSU coach Rodney Hennon said. “We hadn’t covered our field yet so we couldn’t work out there, but we got the guys in the weight room and we were able to get back out there (Thursday) and get a good practice on the field.”
Will Middour was penciled in to start against Mercer for his first start of the season after serving an eight-game suspension to start the season, and will start one of the games during Sunday’s doubleheader against Ohio or SIUE.
The tournament opener is today at 6 p.m., against Ohio.
Sam Howard (2-0, 12 IP, 0.00 ERA, 19 K) will start today, and Josh Wirsu will start Saturday against SIEU. Ryan Frederick will start the other Sunday game.
Ohio’s Jake Roehn (0-1, 7.36 ERA) is slated to start opposite Howard on Friday. SIUE has not announced a starter for Saturday’s game yet.
While the Eagles have put up impressive offensive numbers to start the season — they’re batting a collective .359 and scoring an average 10.5 runs per game — the pitching has really shined.
The team ERA sits at 2.66 and opponents are batting just .208 against.
A pair of sidewinders — righty Matt McCall and lefty Jason Richman — have combined for 19 innings of relief and allowed just three runs while striking out 18.
Richman moved into a relief role this season after dropping down his throwing motion.
“I think he’s really enjoying it,” Hennon said. “He wants to throw every day, and it’s nice to have a guy like that who’s able to bounce back like he does. I really think he’s responded well and he’s having a lot of fun. You see a lot of right handers from down there, and it’s rare you see a lefty from down there. It’s been pretty successful this spring.”
The rainout allowed Aaron Mizell, Josh Black and Kody Adams to recover from minor injuries suffered in last weekend’s four-game sweep over Maryland-Eastern Shore to recover.
“I guess on the positive end, we did have some guys who were banged up last weekend, and it gave them a couple more days to heal up. Kody Adams was doubtful, and this gives him a couple more days to rest.”
