Statesboro will entertain Emaneul County Institute tonight at Womack Field for a scrimmage between the schools’ football teams. Admission is $5 and kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
The two squads will play six, eight-minute quarters, with the varsity of each side playing the first and last two. The first two and last two quarters will be as close to game-like situations as possible, although any forced turnovers on special teams will not count.
This will be the first scrimmage against a different set of faces for SHS, as the Devils squared off against each other on Tuesday afternoon.
“We did have a full fledged scrimmage on Tuesday,” said coach Steve Pennington. “It exposed to our team and to our coaching staff some glaring weaknesses — which is good because we know we still have time to work on it.”
The blue-and-white will continue to work towards improving those weaknesses tonight, as well as working towards solidifying a depth chart.
“We’ve got a number of players who are battling for playing time,” Pennington said. “Not necessarily a starting position but playing time. We want to see how well they respond under the lights.”
With the Devils still competing amongst themselves for playing time and spots on the depth chart, SHS hasn’t had much time to prepare for ECI. The Bulldogs were a dominant 10-1 last season and appear to be the class of Region 3-A again this season.
“We may see some more weaknesses (tonight) because we haven’t spent hardly any time on our preperation for ECI,” said Pennington. “They may make us look pretty bad — they’ve got a fine, good football team coming back.”
The Devils still have two weeks of practice until they travel to Sylvania to face Screven County. Pennington added he was thankful of that fact, as Statesboro’s focus has become inconsistent after an almost flawless first week of camp.
The junior varsity of both sides will take part in a controlled scrimmage during the middle two quarters tonight. Both teams will be on offense for a eight minutes each.
