SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — For the second week in a row, Screven County cruised to a win against a Class AAAAA team.
The Class AA Gamecocks (2-0) trailed at the half, but rode three fourth-quarter touchdowns by running back Jeremy Johnson and beat Effingham County 41--21 Friday on the road.
The Gamecocks scored first, when quarterback Aikeem Mingle handled the first snap from scrimmage and took an option keeper 59 yards to the house.
Jacob Smith, who kicked three extra points on the day, made it 7-0.
Effingham answered to pull within 7-6, but with four minutes to go until halftime, Mingle scored his second rushing touchdown — this time from 26 yards out — to put SCHS up 13-6 after a blocked PAT.
ECHS scored with 47 seconds left in the first half, and a two-point conversion put the Rebels up 14-13 at half-
After Effingham went up 21-13 in the third quarter, Josh Kerson brought SCHS within two with a 19-yard score, and Johnson, who scored five touchdowns in the season opener a week prior, punched in a two-point conversion for a tie and his first points of the game.
It was all Johnson (25 carries, 130 yards) in the fourth quarter, as he pounded in three touchdowns.
Mingle finished with eight carries for 115 yards.
Screven plays its home opener Friday against Appling County at 7:30 p.m.
