    Statesboro’s Eric Ferguson is what coaches call a matchup problem.
    At 6-foot-4, he’s got the height of a post player, but his jumpshot extends well beyond 3-point range.
    “I feel like if you're going to put a guard on him, with his height and his length, he can shoot over the guy,” said Blue Devil head coach Lee Hill. “Plus, if you put a big guy on him he can go around him.”    
    Hill told the lanky 6-foot-4 player that Division-I basketball was a definite possibility, assuming he would be more aggressive on the court.
    In just the past week, Ferguson has responded. He’s led his team in scoring the past two games by making open 3s and driving to the hoop when perimeter defenders guard him too closely.
    “I just needed to step it up, show leadership,” said Ferguson. “I think I can help the team out by being more aggressive.”
    He’s been doing just that. With the height to post up and the shooting touch to knock down 3s, Hill said the Blue Devils are a “different team” when Ferguson is playing aggressively.

Kadedra Evans 

    On Friday, Dec. 15, the Screven County Lady Gamecocks were in a fight with Effingham County. Trailing by two, SCHS senior center Kadedra Evans launched a three-pointer with six seconds left and banked it home for the 34-33 win. It’s been that kind of season and that kind of career for Evans.
    “When she plays well our team plays well,” said Screven head coach Jennifer Acree. “The last couple of games, even though we haven’t played well as a team, she’s been stepping up.”
    The Lady Gamecocks did eventually fall in the championship game of the Gamecock Holiday Invitational Classic on Dec. 23, but that hasn’t stopped Evans from averaging 12.9 and 9.5 rebounds per contest.
    Screven opens region 3-AA play Friday when they travel to Brooklet to face Southeast Bulloch. Evans recognized the new and tough competition this year in the realigned region.
    “They say our competition (this year) is Laney. so I’m really looking forward to playing them,” she said. “We played Josey earlier in the season and beat them by one, so that shows we have a lot of work to do.”
