Margarete Anna Albrecht Moeller was born on January 8, 1925, in Luggewiese, Pommern, Germany, to Maria and Wilhelm Albrecht.
Margarete studied nursing and cared for babies in an orphanage. During the war, she served as a nanny for an American family that encouraged her to leave the eastern side of Germany for her safety. Her parents and older brother, Hans-Georg, were unable to escape.
While in Cuxhafen, she served as a secretary at a military base, where she met Willi Moeller. They were married in Franzenburg, Germany, in March 1948. In April 1950, they immigrated to Port Washington, New York, where they joined members of Willi’s family.
While in New York, they had two daughters, Susan and Linda. The family moved to Washington, Maine, in April 1957 after buying a poultry farm. They created a happy home and the seeds of what would become a flourishing business. The Egg Basket, a local Maine publication, featured the couple in April 1961, noting their farming accomplishments and hobby as ham radio operators under the call letters KIQFR. The article notes “With the Moeller habit of keeping pace with the times, it is safe to predict that if communications are ever established with the moon, the Moellers will be among the first to be exchanging pleasantries with the ‘moon folks.’“
In 1971, the couple moved to Register, Georgia, to continue expanding their poultry business. They established Farmer Automatic of America, partnering with a family of German engineers to build a business that has continued into the third generation.
Described by her family as light-hearted, easy-going and always ready to socialize, Margarete embraced life fully. She loved baking and cooking traditional German recipes, including rouladen and Black Forest cake.
An avid crafter, her crocheted blankets and needle-point work was shared among family and donated to the community through St. Matthew Catholic Church.
She loved returning to visit Germany and meeting local children in Japan. Her favorite destination was Alaska, exploring the natural beauty of the mountains and wildlife. When not traveling, she explored closer to home, frequently kayaking at Cypress Lake and taking art classes at Georgia Southern University. These travels and her family were frequently the subjects of her photography and oil paintings.
She was preceded in death by her husband after 59 years of marriage.
She passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at The Gardens Senior Living & Memory Care Community.
She is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Louie) Huelsewiesche and Linda Moeller-Albrecht; her two grandsons, William (Jenn) Huelsewiesche and Michael (Dawn) Huelsewiesche; and her three great-grandchildren, Ezra, Cora and Aria.
The family would like to send their heart-felt appreciation to the staff of The Gardens Senior Living & Memory Care Community and Gentiva Hospice for the care they provided to Margarete during her residency.
A memorial mass at St. Matthew Catholic Church will be held on Saturday, September 5th, at 11 a.m. with Father. Jason Adams officiating. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association of Georgia.
