In a filing with the state of Georgia last week, Cardinal Glass Industries indicated it would close its manufacturing plant inside the Gateway Industrial Park in Statesboro.
Cardinal submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice on Oct. 6, which is a federal requirement for private employers to provide 60-day advance written notice before moving forward with plant closings or mass layoffs.
According to the notice the closure will affect 115 employees at the 400,000-square-foot plant, with the first employee separation date listed as Dec. 6, 2026, and a second separation date of June 30, 2027.
In a statement about the upcoming closing, Cardinal LG president Kyle Petersen wrote:
"This announcement is to inform you that on Dec. 6, 2026, Cardinal LG will be closing its Statesboro LG facility. While this move is regrettable, it is a necessary reaction to changing conditions in the laminated glass market.
"Cardinal LG has formulated a plan to ensure that our supply of products remains stable and uninterrupted. You will hear from a Cardinal LG representative in the very near future. Should you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your supplying plant or myself."
The Oct. 6 WARN notice lists production, leadership and support positions among those affected. It also indicates that the affected employees are not represented by a labor union.
Cardinal purchased the plant in 2021 from Apogee Enterprises, which had operated the Viracon glass fabrication plant at the Statesboro site since 1998. For a time in the early 2000s, nearly 600 people worked there. Apogee had planned to close the plant prior to Cardinal's purchase.
Cardinal Glass Industries was founded in 1962 and is a private, management-owned company headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Cardinal has more than 10,000 employees, operating from 49 factories around the U.S.
