Betty Jean Hill

Betty Jean Hill, age 86, of Statesboro, died Thursday, March 16, 2023, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility, Statesboro, Ga., after a short illness.

A native of Sylvania, Ga., she was born on July 14, 1936, to Lucile and Perry Hill.

Betty was a 1955 graduate of Screven County High School and continued her education at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., and later took classes at Georgia Southern College.

While in Atlanta, she met her husband, also of Screven County, the Rev. Bill B. Bohannon. They married and had two girls, Beth B. Carscallen (Greg, deceased) of Atlanta and Becky B. Johnson (Don) of Statesboro.

Bill died in 1962. Betty later married again and gained two stepsons, Mike Reese (Janice) and Ramie Reese of Millen.

Betty's faith in God was steadfast. She was a faithful member of Statesboro First Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of the Alathean Sunday School Class and had served as a volunteer for the Welcome Team and was a member of several Women's Mission organizations.

Betty worked several jobs over the years. In the late 1950s, she was secretary to the president of Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga. Later, she was manager of Georgia's first Welcome Center outside Sylvania, Ga. During that time, she helped open The Georgia Welcome Center in Savannah.

After raising her children, she worked as administrative assistant to the director of Libraries at Georgia Southern University. It was from that job that she retired after 25 years.

Betty loved gardening and was a member of several garden clubs over the years, most recently the Evergreen Club.

She volunteered with the American Red Cross and enjoyed bird-watching, reading, playing cards with friends, a good adventure and spending time with family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great joy to her.

Including her girls, Betty is survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Caroline C. Savor (Steven) and children, Delaney and Callen, of Atlanta; Matthew B. Johnson (Kelsey) and children, Baylor and Reed, of Statesboro; and Christopher G. Carscallen (Taylor) of Atlanta. Betty's only brother, Petty T. Hill Jr. (Frances) lives in Lugoff, S.C.

She loved being Aunt Betty to many nieces and nephews.

She also leaves behind a host of special friends, all for whom she was most thankful.

Betty's homegoing service was held at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro on Tuesday, March 21st.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. until noon with a service starting at noon with Dr. John Waters and Dr. Dave Parker officiating.

The graveside service and burial was in Sylvania at the Screven County Memorial Park Cemetery at 3 o'clock that afternoon with Dr. John Waters officiating.
