STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Mary Gay Helmuth, age 86, died Monday evening, January 21, 2019, at Brown’s Health and Rehabilitation, surrounded by her family and under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.
    The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a graduate of Marvin Pittman High School. Mary soon began her career with Statesboro Telephone Company, where she served for 40 years.
    Following her retirement, Mary continued to work as she changed careers, working as a receptionist and visitation attendant.
    She worked with Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home for many years until her health declined and required her to retire.
    Mary enjoyed her years of service with the telephone company and in her later years found joy in serving families at the funeral home.
    She was a member of the Statesboro Church of Christ.
    Mary became a resident of Brown’s Health and Rehabilitation in 2010.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Helmuth.
    Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Kirby Waters of Statesboro and Teresa and Larry Burchfield of Tucson, Arizona; two grandchildren and their spouses, Kelly and Jennifer Waters and Julie and Erk McCurdy, all of Statesboro; a great-grandchild, Jayce Waters; and a sister-in-law, Jean Gay of Statesboro.
    The family will receive visitors on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
    The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Sheehy officiating. Interment will be in Eastside Cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be Lonnie Persinger, Jack Deal, Lewie Stewart, David Self, Gary Duffey and Ben Nessmith.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Raintree Village Children’s Home, 3757 Johnston Road, Valdosta, Georgia 31601.
