Mr. Walter Bowie Evans, 88, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Walter was born in the Farmdale Community to the late Elizabeth McGee and Joe G. Evans Sr. in 1930.
He graduated from Screven County High School in 1948 and obtained an associate’s degree in forestry in 1950 from the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
He retired as owner and operator of Evans Lumber Company.
He was a lifelong member of the Middle Ground Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities that included deacon, chairman of the Deacons and Cemetery and Building committees and as church treasurer for 62 years.
He was a member of the Screven County Farm Bureau for 53 years, recipient of the Young Farmer of the Year in 1997 and 2001 Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Award. He was instrumental in the transition of rural routes to modern-day named roads of Screven County. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing, gardening and cruising timber.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his late wife, Lutrica Powell Evans; and brother, Joe G. Evans Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Carol Evans; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter Gregory Evans and Bowie Craig and Tommie Evans, all of Sylvania, Ga.; stepson, William Nielsen Norman of Appling, Ga.; sister, Ann Estes of Milledgeville, Ga.; grandchildren, Ella and John McAfee of Sylvania, Ga.; Lee and Grant Hendrickson, Bo and Danielle Evans, all of Marietta, Ga.; Brandy and Eric Thompson and Blake Evans, all of Sylvania, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Lilly McAfee, Lilah McAfee, Emelia Thompson, Bellamy McAfee and Bowie Craig Evans III.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 3, 2018, at the Joiner-Anderson Screven Chapel from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The service will be held Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Middle Ground Baptist Church in Sylvania, Ga., at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Russell Lyle and the Rev. Tim Huffingham officiating.
Mr. Evans will lie in state an hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Blake Evans, Bo Evans, Grant Hendrickson, John McAfee, Nielson Norman and Eric Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of the Middle Ground Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Middle Ground Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Greg Lee, 5377 Savannah Highway, Sylvania, GA 30467.
