STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Alfonso Shavers, age 64, passed away suddenly at his residence on Tuesday evening, January 8, 2019.
    He was a native of Bulloch County, but reared in Plainfield, New Jersey. He was educated in the public schools of Union County and was a graduate of Plainfield High School class of 1972. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
    He began his radio broadcasting career in 1971 with WERA in Plainfield, N.J., as "Al Dee". He later moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he was affiliated with Z-102 and Magic 103.9 as "Rocking Al Roberts." He later moved to Dallas, Texas, where he was known as "The Mighty Al". After settling down in Statesboro, he worked at the Statesboro Police Department and Argus Events Staffing.
    He is survived by three daughters, Rasheedah Shavers, Greensboro, N.C.; Khadijah Mobley, and her husband, Michael, Irvine, Texas; and Aliyah Leffall, Seattle, Wash.; four sons, Joquan Shavers, Baltimore, Md.; Khayree Shavers, Dallas, Texas; Eli Jackson and his wife, Tabitha, Irvine, Texas; and Alex Leffall, Seattle, Wash.; one stepson, Maurice Jackson, Irvine, Texas; 10 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his sisters, Andrea Gethers, Plainfield, N.J.; and Lovel Kay, her husband, Jermaine, Statesboro; four aunts, Grace Brack, Statesboro; the Reverend Barbara Davis, Statesboro; and Tauheedah Muhammad and Generia Walker, both of Plainfield, N.J.; two uncles, Eddie Brack, and his wife, Zenobia Roselle, New Jersey; and Lavon Brack and his wife, Yvonne, Statesboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    The funeral service for Mr. Shavers will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019, at 11 a.m. in the James R. Barnes Mortuary Chapel with Elder Donald Chavers officiating. Burial will be in the A.C. Dunlap Memorial Cemetery.
    The remains will lie in state on Friday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour. There will be no viewing after the service.
