Eugene Talmadge “Gene” Phillips, age 71, of Register, Ga., passed into enteral rest at his home in the presence of his wife of 50 years, Georgia Ann Herndon Phillips, on July 3rd, 2018.
    He was a native of Burke County and resided in Bulloch County for the past 34 years.
    He was born in Waynesboro, Ga., and is the son of the late Clarence and Marie Phillips.
    Gene was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. After the Army, he was mostly employed in the agriculture industry with notable work at Goldkist and Tillman and Deal Farm Supply. He was last employed at Windmere Greenhouse.
    He enjoyed working with plants and flowers. He took pride in his garden and was known for having a green thumb. He was most proud of his family, children and grandchildren.
    He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Marie Phillips; brother, Bill Phillips; and a sister, Gladys Shaw; three sisters-in-law, Shirly Eskew, Lucile Kilpatrick and Betty Herndon; five brothers-in-law, Wayne Herndon, Larry Herndon, Frank Taylor, Julian Eskew and Olin Blackstone.
    Surviving are his loving wife, Georgia Anne Herndon Phillips; his children: a daughter, Tonya Phillips; and three sons, Tad Phillips (Tammy), Travis Phillips and Tony Phillips, all of Statesboro; his four granddaughters who he adored, Shelby Phillips, Allison Phillips, Wynne Phillips, Lexi Phillips, also all of Statesboro.
    Also surviving are three brothers, Jerry Phillips, Bob (Ellen) Phillips and Joey (Becky) Phillips, all of Waynesboro; two sisters, Helen Taylor of Millen and Jane (Robert) Rogers of Waynesboro. In addition, four brothers-in-law, Richard (Virginia) Herndon, Tommy Herndon, Robert (Arlene) Herndon, Arlon (Connie) Herndon; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Lee Blackstone, Clara (Bubba) Dukes, Emily (Lance) Goninan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
    A special thanks to Ogeechee Area Hospice for their care and support for him and his family.
    A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 8th, 2018, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Kennedy Funeral Home in Metter, Ga.
