Southeast Bulloch High School teacher Yvette Smith was named Bulloch County’s Teacher of the Year Tuesday.
Schools superintendent Lewis Holloway, Chamber of Commrce education committee chairman Dennis Key and principal Joni Walker-Seier surprised Smith in her classroom by presenting her with a bouquet of flowers and a framed certificate.
As she accepted the flowers, she said of her honor, “It makes a difference when you love what you do, and I love my job.”
A 10-year teaching veteran, Smith teaches 9th-12th grade agriculture education, including courses in horticulture, forestry, wildlife, landscape design,and floral design. As advisor to the school’s FFA club, she has implemented the Miss SEB FFA reverse beauty pageant with proceeds donated to the Bulloch County Relay for Life efforts.
Through the FFA, Ms. Smith has enabled students to participate in numerous service projects including donating food to Joseph’s Home for Boys, delivering fruit baskets to the needy, recycling, making step stools for local daycare centers, and landscaping Habitat for Humanity houses.
During the 2006-07 school year, Smith earned a Youth Service America grant to create a service learning project entitled “Friends with Flowers.” Through this project Smith and her horticulture students make and deliver floral arrangements to hospice patients and homebound citizens. She also is the department chair for Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education, and she is a member of the school’s leadership team.
Anot Smith, SEB principal Walker-Seier said: “Ms. Yvette Smith is the consummate professional. She is not only an excellent teacher but also a positive role model for our youth. It is a pleasure to observe her in action; she has high expectations and makes learning fun. In addition, she does a superb job with FFA. Our students excel under her leadership. Words seem inadequate to express the gratitude, respect, and admiration I have for her.”
Every year teachers at each school select a peer to represent them in the Bulloch County Teacher of the Year competition. These teachers who are selected then complete applications, which are scored anonymously by judges from outside the school system. As Bulloch County’s Teacher of the Year, Smith will compete with other county winners for the title of Georgia Teacher of the Year.
