Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman Tuesday after determining she beat her 5-year-old son in the face with a belt.

Shante Nicole Wright, 28, of Continental Road, was jailed on charges of first-degree child cruelty, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said in a Friday news release.

Bulloch County sheriff's Sgt. Kenny Thompson responded Tuesday to Langston Chapel Elementary School for a report of child cruelty and, after meeting with school officials and caseworkers from the Bulloch County Department of Family and Children Services, "examined the 5-year-old male child, who displayed bruising around one of his eyes," Anderson said.

"After speaking with the child, Sgt. Thompson interviewed the child's mother concerning the injury. Based on the physical and testimonial evidence, Sgt. Thompson placed Wright under arrest for causing the injury to the 5-year-old's face by use of a belt," Anderson said.

Wright was transported to the Bulloch County Jail and was later released on bond.

The Department of Family and Children Services "continues to be involved in the case," Anderson said.
