A woman who reportedly attacked a child with a phone charger cord is in jail with no bond, according to Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown.

Nikita Lashawn Tolbert, 21, of Bird Road, is charged with first-degree cruelty to children, and further charges are possible, he said.

Bulloch County sheriff’s Investigator Prethenia Cone was called to a local elementary school, where the 6-year-old female victim was found with “marks and bruises” on her buttocks and lower legs. The case was originally referred to Statesboro police, but after investigations revealed the incident took place at a Bird Road residence outside the city limits, Cone responded, he said.

Tolbert and another person were found to have been caring for five children in the Bird Road home, with the victim being the oldest child. The Department of Family and Children Services was contacted and is investigating the case further, including interviewing parents of the children Tolbert was watching, he said.

The child was checked and medically cleared, he said.

Tolbert was arrested and taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where she remains without bond pending further court action and possibly further charges, he said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Cone at the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 764-8888.
