William James Middle School eighth grader Scarlett Shumate, 14, celebrated quietly, but happily after spelling the word "unanimous" to take the title during the 2011 Bulloch County Schools annual Spelling Bee at Sallie Zetterower Elementary School.

Children ranging from fourth through eighth grades competed in Monday's spelling bee. Each of the school system's nine elementary and four middle schools held their own bee and winners from each of the schools participated in the system-wide spelling bee.

Monday's winner advances to the District 8 Spelling Bee at Waycross College Auditorium Feb. 26. The winner there advances to state and the state winner advances to the Scripps-Howard National Bee.
