Walker Pharmacy was honored Wednesday as Statesboro-Bulloch County's Small Business of the Year at a luncheon hosted by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Retail Committee.
Walker Pharmacy was chosen from a field of seven nominees including Brown and Rountree, P.C.; Coldwell Banker Tanner Realty; L. A. Waters Furniture; Maxwell Engineering; St. Andrews Builders; and Stubbs Oil Company.
After a brief introduction by 2006 Small Business of the Year recipient Mike Anderson (Bulloch Fertilizer), Lindsay and Deborah Walker accepted a plaque and expressed surprised gratitude.
'We appreciate it, we are humbled by the honor, and we do not deserve it," Lindsay Walker said.
Ray McKinney, chairman of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber board of directors, announced the nominees and past recipients. "We do value the small businesses because they make a large part of our community.
"These businesses truly embody what we want to see in a small business," he said. "We truly appreciate what they do."
Anderson stated his introduction with a speech filled with clues to the 2007 Small Business of the Year.
He described the business as " a strong partnership .. of two energetic partners who compliment each other." He described the Walkers as "ethical .. down to earth, dedicated business people with an entrepreneurial sense about them."
Lindsay and Deborah Walker's "partnership began as high school sweethearts" and the couple came to Statesboro in 1984 to open their first pharmacy. The business expanded in 1992 to include Little Doses children;s wear, and in 2002 the Walkers opened Walker Home Medical and their second pharmacy as well as a third store, Brooklet Drugs, he said.
The Walkers plan to open a second Walker Home Medical store in Savannah, he said.
Walker Pharmacy and related endeavors employ about 60 people, Anderson said.
The Walkers are active in local civic organizations, are members of Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church where they both teach Sunday school and Lindsay is a deacon, and are very involved in the lives and activities of their three sons, Anderson said.
After the luncheon, the Walkers were busy being congratulated by several guests.
"We are extremely humbled to win such an award,"Lindsay Walker said. "There are others more deserving."
"We're just very excited and thankful," said Deborah Walker. "We're very proud and hope we can continue to work in the community and live here."
