Statesboro slaying suspect charged
James Leslie Ward

Charges have been filed against a man police say shot and killed a man at Morris Heights Apartments Wednesday.

According to Bulloch County Jail records, James Leslie Ward, 33, Oak Hollow Drive, was charged Thursday with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by receiving stolen property.

Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said Thursday in a press release that Ward shot and killed Gabriel Henderson, 38, of Denmark Street. Police have released no information regarding possible reasons for the altercation, as the investigation is incomplete.

Statesboro police Cpl. Justin Samples said the handgun suspected to have been used in the shooting was recovered and officers learned it had been reported stolen earlier this year in a vehicle break-in near Edgewood Acres subdivision.

Ward was arrested a short time after police issued a lookout for him Thursday morning. He was located on Packinghouse Road and taken into custody without incident, Samples said.

Ward's sister, Shevone Denise Ward, 37, of Morris Heights Apartments, was arrested Wednesday evening, charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer for hindering officers during the investigation, Turner said.

Police received a call of gunshots fired at Morris Heights Apartments on Morris Street at approximately 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

"When officers arrived, the victim ... was located with multiple gunshot wounds," Turner said.

Henderson was immediately transported to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
