The Statesboro Fire Department invites the public to attend the annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack that shook the nation in 2001.

The event will be held at Bulloch Memorial Gardens starting at 8:30 a.m., said Statesboro Fire Chief Tim Grams.

"Representatives from Statesboro Fire, Statesboro Police, Bulloch County Fire, Bulloch County Sheriff's Office and other agencies will be on hand to remember those that perished and honor those whose lives were so bravely given in the service of others in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001," he said.

The presentation of colors and the remembrance wreath, the "striking of the fives," the 21-gun salute and other honored ceremonial practices will be observed. The ceremony should take approximately 30 minutes, he said.

The event is hosted by Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home and Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Cancer benefit

The Statesboro Fire Department is also holding its annual cancer awareness fundraiser, a T-shirt sale to benefit local cancer groups, according to Statesboro Fire Lt. Derek Stoddard.

"The Statesboro Fire Department has again joined in the fight against breast cancer and is now selling its annual Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirts to the public," he said. "All proceeds raised from the sales will go to benefit local cancer awareness funds, helping people in our immediate area."

This year's shirts are military green with the Statesboro Fire Department logo and "nozzle ribbon" in pink and white on the front, left chest. The back of the shirt features a pink fire axe within an American flag, along with this year's slogan "I Can Fight Cancer."

These same shirts will be worn on duty by firefighting personnel in support of those who are currently battling or have beaten cancer and in remembrance of those who have lost the fight, he said.

Sizes and prices are $12 for adult sizes small through extra large and $15 for 2X and 3X. Kid's sizes 18 months, 2T, 3T, 4T, small, medium and large are all $10. Shirts may be purchased at the main office at Station 1, 24 West Grady St.
