The Statesboro City Council will discuss a potential ordinance that would regulate wrecker and towing services inside the city limits after reciving reports that some opperators are charging up to $150 for an involuntary tow.

            According to the proposed ordinance, the average nighttime voluntary  towing rates range from $65 to $75.

            Under the proposed ordinance, wreckers and tow services would have to be permitted by the city and have a fenced storage facility within five miles of the city limits. However, nothing in the ordinance sets prices for involuntary towing. Instead, it simply sets requirements on what towing companies must meet to be licensed and the procedures they are to follow.

            Other items on the city's agenda include:

            ‰ a request to rezone property at 115 Dodd Circle from highway commercial to highway oriented commercial;

            ‰ a request to reduce the required number of parking spaces to four and allow crush and run instead of pavement for property at 17 East Jones Avenue;

            ‰ a request to rezone property at 109 Broad Street from high density multi-family residential to R-6 (single-family residential);

            ‰ a variance request to elimintate the required parking and landscape buffer for the Elm Street Church of God at 29 Elm Street;

            ‰ a variance request to build a home on a legal nonconforming lot and reduce the required setback requirements;

            ‰ a motion to award a bid in the amount of $176,270.50 to Allied Utilities Inc. for the Central Street sewer replacement project;

            ‰ a motion to award a bid in the amount of $243,947.30 to AM-Liners East Inc. for the Williams Street sewer replacement project;

            ‰ a motion to award a bid in the amount of $72,377.31 to Rozier Ford for three trucks with utility bodies for the Water and Sewer Department.

            The city's meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the city hall council chambers.
