The sixth annual Spring into Statesboro will offer outdoor activities for children and families in downtown Statesboro from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, coinciding with the weekly Mainstreet Farmers Market.
Georgia Southern University students enrolled in Recreation Program classes taught by Dr. Brent Wolfe and Dr. James Bigley create and host many of the Spring into Statesboro games and activities. Others are offered by businesses and sponsor organizations.
“The Georgia Southern University Recreation Program is excited to partner with Downtown Statesboro Development Authority again to host another event for the city of Statesboro,” Wolfe said in a DSDA news release. “This experience is always an amazing opportunity for our students as they have the chance to put lessons learned in the classroom into action while serving our community.”
As part of downtown activities, there will also be a Great American Clean-Up beginning at 9 a.m. for volunteers who wish to help tidy up the Blue Mile.
A Party Harbor bouncy house, Kids Farm alpacas, a kiddy train and the Zero Gravity extreme sport stunt people will also be part of the event, the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority announced. Children can have their pictures taken with superhero and princess characters that will be strolling East Main Street, and young musicians from Pladd Dot’s School of Rock will perform on the courthouse steps.
Meanwhile, Shawn Jackson, laboratory coordinator at the FabLab in Georgia Southern’s City Campus on East Main, will be demonstrating the 3-D printer, laser cutter and other prototype-producing equipment, plus automation design and control platforms such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino, for the public, the DSDA announced.
This year’s sponsors include Dr. Troy Lawhorn of Statesboro Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dr. Horace Deal of Statesboro Vision Source. Chick-fil-A, the Statesboro Tree Board and the Statesboro Beautification Commission also help support the event.
As previously reported, Spring into Statesboro downtown is occurring the same day as this year’s ArtsFest, hosted by Statesboro Bulloch Parks and Recreation at Sweetheart Circle, the park on Southern Drive at Georgia Southern University. The 35th Annual ArtsFest will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
