Statesboro City Council has called a special meeting for 8:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall to adopt an ordinance on providing police escorts for funeral processions. Effective Jan. 1, the Statesboro Police Department ceased providing free escorts for funerals, offering off-duty officers to be paid by funeral homes instead. City officials cited the demands on officer time with the department short of officers.
