An Ellabell couple ended up behind bars after shots were fired during an argument while squirrel hunting.

Peggy Lynn Smothers, 41, R. T. Myers Road, and Christopher Jason Biggers, 40, of the same address, were in the woods squirrel hunting Saturday around 5:30 p.m. when they began arguing, according to Bulloch County Sheriff's incident reports.

Biggers and Smothers are in a relationship, but the argument was about Biggers' current marriage, said Deputy Randall Norman in written reports.

The argument turned physical when Biggers grabbed Smothers, "mushed her face and slapped her across the face with an open hand," he stated.

In the heat of the fight, Smothers fired off two rounds from a .38 Special handgun, aiming in Biggers' direction, he said.

After the shots were fired, both Smothers and Biggers returned home, where Smothers dialed 911 because the argument continued. She later tried to cancel the call, but Norman responded to the residence anyway, he said.

Norman found two spent shell casings from the gun in Smothers' pants pocket. Smothers tested positive for alcohol intoxication, but Biggers refused the test, he said. Both parties were intoxicated, according to Norman's report.

Due to inconsistencies in their statements and level of intoxication, Norman arrested both Biggers and Smothers. Biggers was charged with simple battery and disorderly conduct while Smothers was charged with pointing a gun at another, reckless conduct and disorderly conduct.

They were both taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where they later posted bond.
