The Southeast Bulloch High School Marching Band went down to Blackshear Saturday to take part in the 2007 annual Sound of Silver Marching Band Competition. The Yellow Jackets came home loaded with gold medals, sweeping top honors, including the Grand Champion award.
The event was held at Pierce County High School’s “Bear Paw” stadium and featured a total of 22 bands, 19 of which were entered in the competition.
Bands and their supporters came from all over Georgia and northern Florida. There were three classes: A, which has fewer than 50 members, AA, which has between 50 and 100, members and AAA, with more than 100 members. There were three judges to evaluate the bands, one of who was on the field right in the middle of the action.
The bands ranged from 20 members to nearly 160 members: SEB was a AA band, with 53 members.
Southeast Bulloch's “Swarm” took the field at 3:45 p.m. – dressed in their new “Under Construction” uniforms, which consisted of hardhats and fluorescent vests and Blue Swarm t-shirts. They also used construction gates and drums as props, which were donated to the band.
Many bands already had performed by the time the Swarm took the field. By the end of the second number, supporters of the other high school bands were on their feet clapping.
Band director Matt Olsen put together a medley of popular songs in a different format, changing the speed and tempo of the songs played, as well as the directions in which band members marched while playing the tunes. When scores were tallied, SEB walked away with gold.
In addition to the entire SEB band being rated “Superior” (the best rating possible) in all eight categories, the SEB drum major tied for second place overall, the drum line took first place overall and the dance line took second place overall. Then came the overall rankings — in addition to taking Best in Class (AA), the SEB Swarm won Best in the Blue Division (both A and AA).
The top teams of the performance were then announced: Terry Parker High School of Jacksonville Florida (AA band) took third place overall, Tift County Georgia High School (AAA band) took second place overall, and then it was announced that Southeast Bulloch High School was this years grand champion of the Sounds of Silver Marching Band Competition.
