SYLVANIA - Screven County deputies said a man arrested outside Oliver resisted at every point of command, ending in a tasing inside the jail after the deputies said offender grabbed a deputy's hand in an attempt to injure him.
During a meeting between Officer Chris Crockett, Inv. Michael Duncan, and Deputy Jake Saxon at Clark's convenient store on Oliver Highway, Saxon said they noticed a white GMC truck pull up to the gas pump and a black man later identified as Jerry Black of Newington exit the passenger side door.
Approaching the officers, Saxon said the man, unsteady on his feet and slurred in speech, began speaking to them but not making any sense. Saxon said he advised the man to either make a purchase or leave the store, at which time Saxon said the man went inside.
Another man, later identified as Black's brother, Leslie Black, of Newington, was seen exiting the driver's side of the truck, and after pumping gas, was seen pulling his vehicle behind the store. The vehicle again appeared, when the driver parked in front of the store, got out and began walking toward the highway, leaving his vehicle and passenger behind, Saxon said.
At this point, Saxon, in his patrol car, pursued the man on foot. Activating patrol lights and pulling over near the man, Saxon said he began to run from him. After giving a verbal command to stop and lie down on the ground, Saxon said the man stopped but would not lie on the ground. As he turned to run again, Saxon said he took him to the ground.
Jerry Black was found still in the parking lot. When he was told to leave, Black became belligerent, Saxon said, at which time Ofc. Crockett placed him under arrest also.
In the cell, Black grabbed Duncan's thumb, Saxon said, twisting his finger to inflict pain while trying to stand up. Duncan deployed his taser on Black, at which time Black stopped.
Leslie Raymon Black, 42, of Oliver Highway in Newington, was charged with DUI refusal, and obstruction of an officer. His brother Jerry Orlando Black, 52, also of Newington is being held for Newington PD.
