METTER - Papa Buck's BBQ in Metter recently was listed as one of the best BBQ restaurants in America by the National BBQ news.
Beginning as a mobile unit, Von and Jeremiah Johnson first set up serving their brand of barbecue in the Retrievers parking lot in Statesboro and also in downtown Twin City. Soon they decided to bring Papa Bucks to Metter.
The National Barbecue News just released its updated guide of "Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurants in America" for the month of March, said publisher Kell Phelps, and Papa Buck's made the list.
"We are thrilled to receive the honor of one of the best BBQ joints in America," said Von Johnson. "We take pride in serving our family recipe to customers and appreciate everyone who supports us."
National BBQ is the world's number one publication dedicated to barbecue, said Phelps.
Papa Buck's BBQ is one of 28 on the March list, he said, and one of only four restaurants named in Georgia.
The "Best of the Best" guide awarded its honor to only 55 barbecue restaurants across America in the past year, Phelps said.
To be eligible for the list, a restaurant must be taste-tested by an affiliate of National BBQ, without notice to the eatery.
The award is given for a one-year period, Phelps said, at which time the restaurant is re-tested in the same manner to see if they make the grade for the following year.
"We began Papa Bucks with the notion to serve great smoked BBQ that people would enjoy," said Jeremiah Johnson, "and that is the goal every time we open the restaurant doors-nothin' fancy, just good ole' Q."
Papa Buck's BBQ can be found off at I-16, Exit 104, in Metter.
