Road closed following minor train derailment
road closed

A minor train derailment at the railroad crossing on East Vine Street Thursday caused temporary closure of that portion of the roadway.

According to Statesboro Parks and Streets Superintendent Robert Seamans, a train was hauling rocks to a nearby asphalt plant when the heavy load caused the tracks to separate and the train car to slide off the rails.

The accident caused minor damage to the street where the tracks crossed. Georgia Southern Railway is replacing tracks and railroad ties along the railroad between East Vine and East Main streets, and when that is completed (expected within a couple of days), the city will be able to make minor repairs on the asphalt. The crossing is expected to be opened by next week, he said.
