Portal Police arrested a man they said stole auto parts from an acquaintance and returned them for a refund.
Christopher Burnette, 21, Grady Street, Portal, broke into a vehicle that belonged to a man he knew and took a gasket set that was valued around $200, said Portal Police Chief Jason Sapp.
Burnette then took the parts to Mallard Auto Parts in Statesboro and obtained a cash refund. Employees of the parts store recorded Burnette’s tag number as well as his description, as he did not have a receipt, and shared the information with police investigating the reported automobile break-in.
When questioned, Burnette admitted the theft, Sapp said. Burnette was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, booked on charges of entering auto and theft by taking.
