A Brannen Street woman remains in critical condition after surgery for wounds inflicted by her son, who attacked her Thursday afternoon with an axe, police said.
Statesboro Police Det. Lt. Thomas Williams said Joelyn Towler, 55, Brannen Street, underwent several hours of surgery for facial and head area injuries, yet was still listed in " critical condition" Friday.
Statesboro Police officers arrested Towler's son, 33-year-old Deron Leonard Towler, on charges of aggravated battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
Statesboro Police incident reports list the weapon as an axe. Additional details of the incident are sketchy, but a neighbor, Tracy Grimes, said she saw Devon Towler as police arrested him.
She said he fled, but officers quickly apprehended him in his yard, pulling guns and ordering him " Don't you move, don't you move."
Statesboro Police Chief said officers responded to a call about a reported domestic assault around 4:15 Thursday, arriving to find Towler "standing in the yard." Officers detained him while others entered the home, finding Joelyn Towler " in a semiconscious state, suffering from severe injuries."
Ms. Towler was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, then transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center by helicopter for further treatment, he said.
Deron Towler was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond, he said.
Grimes said Devon Towler was feared by neighbors, and she herself warned her son to stay away from him.
"He just stands there and studies everybody," she said. Neighbors have complained that he prowls the neighborhood, and has been seen in other people's back yards.
Det. James Winskey, who is handling the case, was not immediately available for comment Friday. However, Williams said the case remains under investigation and he could not divulge additional details regarding the attack.
