A man investigators said struck a woman and her 12-year-old son with a pipe during an argument is behind bars, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said.
Clarence Earvin Childers, 47, Williams Lane, is charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children and battery stemming from an incident during which he physically attacked a neighbor who became angry because Childers tried to discipline her son, he said.
Bulloch County Sheriff Cpl. Noel Brown, Sgt. Kenny Stone and Deputy Bob Dinello responded to a Burkhalter Road residence Tuesday after receiving a call about a fight, Anderson said.
The female victim, who lives near Childers, told deputies Childers threatened her 12-year-old son with disciplinary action over an undisclosed reason, and the mother intervened, he said.
When she defended her son, Childers became enraged and grabbed her by the throat, choking her, he said. Then he grabbed a metal pipe and struck her in  the leg with it.
The juvenile then tried to defend his mother, but Childers “kicked him in the stomach” and also struck the child in the head with the metal pipe, he said.
After speaking to the victims and witnesses, Dinello placed Childers under arrest, Anderson said. Both victims suffered minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.
The pipe was taken as evidence and Childers was taken to the Bulloch County Jail where he remains without bond, Anderson said.
