One person cashed two fraudulent checks for more than $9,000 total, and another person tried to cash one for more than $1,900, Statesboro police said.

All three attempts took place Wednesday morning, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said in a news release issued Wednesday evening.

At 11:20 a.m., the Statesboro Police Department received a call from Farmers & Merchants Bank on Brannen Street in reference to someone trying to cash a fraudulent check for more than $1,900. The suspect was gone when police arrived.

Police immediately alerted all banks in the area about the attempt and gave a description of the suspect. The police department then received two reports of a person fitting the description with another person who successfully cashed checks at two other local banks. The fraudulent checks that were cashed totaled more than $9,000.

The police department's Investigations Bureau is currently investigating the identities of the two suspects. They were described as black males wearing bright yellow construction style vests. The fraudulent checks were fabricated to appear as though they were issued by two construction companies, one in Brooklet and one in Guyton, Turner said.

Police also notified Chief Deputy Jared Akins of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office, who then alerted banks in the county of the incidents.

The Statesboro-Bulloch Crime Suppression Team is currently assisting in the investigation.
