Man not arrested but resigns from position

It's not a good idea to take illegal drugs to work, especially if you are employed by a law enforcement agency.

A Bulloch County Sheriff's Office employee who reportedly brought marijuana to his workplace resigned Tuesday after a K9 sniffed out a trace amount of the drug in his vehicle.

The Statesboro Herald is withholding the employee's name, as he was not charged because the amount of marijuana found was not sufficient for arrest, according to sheriff's incident reports.

Cpl. Kirk McGlamery and his K9 partner, Max, performed a "free-air search" in the Sheriff's Office parking lot Tuesday, where Max alerted to the employee's car, according to reports.

Capt. Rick Rountree summoned the employee to the parking lot, where Rountree told him that he had received information that the man had been smoking marijuana before work. The employee denied having any drugs in the vehicle but said he did have a pistol in the back seat.

Max alerted again inside the car, and the deputies found a small amount of marijuana in the center console, according to reports.

After Rountree read the employee his rights, the man admitted that he had smoked marijuana that night and said it helped him sleep. The employee then met with Chief Deputy Bill Black and turned in his resignation, reports stated.
