Man critical after beating
Suspect held without bond
Landon Lee Sowell

A man who made unwanted advances towards a woman at a Super Bowl party Sunday remains in critical condition after being beaten by the woman's boyfriend, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.

Marvin Carlton King, 49, Pike Road, suffered broken bones, a collapsed lung and brain injury after Landon Lee Sowell, 19, Dyches Road, beat him and kicked him until others at the party restrained him, he said.

Sowell is charged with aggravated battery and remains without bond in the Bulloch County Jail, he said.

Screven County Sheriff's deputies received a call Sunday night about a truck "sitting on the Ogeechee River bridge at Ga. 24 on the Bulloch-Screven line," Anderson said. A Screven deputy responded and found King sitting in his Ford Ranger, covered in blood with "severe facial trauma."

Screven County EMS responded and transported King to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment. King told deputies he had been beaten earlier at a Bulloch County location.

According to Bulloch County Sheriff's incident reports, the beating took place at a Dyches Road residence, where King was attending a Super Bowl party.

The attack occurred sometime between 8 and 10 p.m., reports stated.

Upon finding the incident took place in Bulloch County, Bulloch County Sheriff's investigators and deputies obtained a brief statement from King about where he had been attacked. Then they went to the bridge and processed the scene where the truck was left.

Investigators gathered evidence such as blood swabs from inside the truck, as well as clothing from the Dyches Road location including "boots with blood" from "Sowell's bedroom."

They also collected the victim's clothing from the emergency room, according to reports.

King was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center's trauma unit for "treatment for a brain injury, multiple broken bones and a collapsed lung," Anderson said.

The Dyches Road residence was "a short distance from where King was found," he said. After collecting evidence from the home, deputies and investigators questioned witnesses, who said Sowell "became angry" when King made "unwanted advances towards" Sowell's girlfriend while at the party.

Sowell then "physically struck and kicked King until being restrained by other partygoers," he said. "No one called the sheriff's office or EMS for assistance during or after the assault."

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Bulloch County Sheriff's Inv. Jared Akins at 764-8888.
