A Brooklet man was charged last week with vehicular homicide more than a year after an Evans County accident that took the lives of two Swainsboro residents.

Daniel Edward Hodges, 36, of U.S. Highway 80 in Brooklet, was charged April 8 with vehicular homicide after a months-long investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, Sgt. Bert Clifton with Georgia State Patrol Post 45 in Statesboro said Thursday.

On Feb. 26, 2013, around 11:26 p.m., Hodges was traveling on Georgia Highway 169 approaching the intersection with Georgia Highway 129 in Evans County. At around the same time, a vehicle occupied by Hal Foote, 24, of Brown Street in Swainsboro, and Whitney Shardale Johnson, 23, of King Court Drive in Swainsboro, approached the intersection on Highway 129, Clifton said.

Hodges stopped at the intersection, marked by a stop sign, but then pulled into the path of the vehicle carrying the other two. It is unknown whether Foote or Johnson was driving, as they were both ejected from the vehicle after it struck Hodges’ car, Clifton said.

The Tahoe in which Foote and Johnson were traveling rotated and flipped several times, he said.
Hodges was released after the crash on a $2,000 property bond but now faces court regarding the vehicular homicide charge, according to Evans County Jail records.
