Officers responding to a call at 4 a.m. Sunday found a woman crawling on the ground near Eagle Walk Apartments on Knight Drive, bleeding from stab wounds. Investigation led to the arrest of her husband, who was intoxicated when officers located him, police said.
The woman was treated for four stab wounds, said Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams. Two were in her back. She was treated for the injuries and released from East Georgia Regional Medical Center after speaking with Det. Ken Scott, he said.
The woman told Scott her husband, Juan Cruz Cormona, 44, "came home drunk and began stabbing her," he said.
Carmona began stabbing her while she was sleeping, then fled after the attack, according to Statesboro Police incident reports, which also stated the incident involved alcohol.
Investigators posted a lookout for Cormona, and shortly afterward Georgia Southern University Police Sgt. Todd Cross found Cormona "staggering on Lanier Drive in an obvious state of intoxication," Williams said.
Scott arrested Cormona, charging him with aggravated assault in violation of the domestic violence act, and took him to the Bulloch County Jail. Cormona remained incarcerated Tuesday evening with no bond, according to jail records.
