A Bulloch County man has been jailed for allegedly intercepting a donation meant for a local charity.
James Mullard Shy Jr., 30, was arrested Wednesday by the Statesboro Police Department and is being charged with felony theft by conversion after stealing nearly $800 worth of goods meant for Pray it Forward Bulloch County, according to Major Scott Brunson.
Shy was apprehended when a search of the College Walk apartment he was currently staying in uncovered a large portion of the missing donation, Brunson said.
“Detective (Tommy) Brown met with Shy at about 11 a.m. and went to where the defendant was staying,” he said. “There, they recovered some of the property that had been donated to the group.”
Some of the items found include: a children’s chair, diaper bag and TV.
According to representatives of Pray it Forward, a group that collects goods for sale and donation to benefit people in need, Shy responded to a message posted by the item donor on Pray it Forward’s Facebook page.
A member of the group, but not authorized to accept donations, Shy scheduled a meeting with the donor through private messages and took the items under false pretenses, they said.
The group says Shy relinquished some items when questioned about the donation, but a police report was filed when they later learned, through speaking with the donor, that what Shy had given up was only a small portion of the contribution.
The total donation, worth an estimated $755 according to the report, included an assortment of toys and clothing items in addition to those found in the apartment.
Shy is being held at the Bulloch County Jail.
