A 10-month-old baby who suffered physical injuries including internal bleeding and brain trauma was assaulted by its mother’s boyfriend, said Statesboro Police Capt. Scott Brunson.
Police Chief Stan York said Ronnie Elvis Hulett, 28, Valley Trail, is behind bars on charges of first degree cruelty to children as well as making false statements and writings.
Police responded Sunday to East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s emergency room regarding a severely injured infant, York said. Det. Ken Scott opened an investigation and discovered evidence that the child had been abused, he said.
“Further investigation revealed ... Huett was responsible for the injuries to the infant,” he said. “The infant suffered from various bruises, abrasions, internal bleeding, and traumatic brain injury indicative of Shaken Baby Syndrome.”
The baby was “stabilized” and returned to family members, he said.         Investigators found Hulett in Emanuel County and arrested on warrants Scott issued. He was turned over to the Bulloch County Jail, where he is being held without bond, according to jail records.
Anyone with information regarding the crime is asked to contact the Statesboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at (912) 764-1542 or the Statesboro Police Department’s main office at 764-9911, York said.
