Bible story with a Southern twist will benefit community programs
W 100113 COTTON PATCH GOSPEL
Jesus, portrayed by David Hopkins, left, sends forth his followers to share the good news during rehearsal for "Cotton Patch Gospel," a musical play that is based on the Gospel of Matthew but tells the story of Jesus as if it happened in 1960s Georgia.
A classic story with a unique — and Southern — twist will be brought to life this weekend at the Averitt Center for the Arts. And, in keeping with its message of goodwill, two local charities will benefit. The Emma Kelly Theater will host three performances (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) of a musical titled “Cotton Patch Gospel,” a comical and colloquial retelling of the life of Jesus, set in 1960s-era rural Georgia.
