Statesboro Publishing is going audio. Publisher Randy Morton announced an audio studio is nearly finished inside the Statesboro Herald building and both live and taped audio broadcasts soon will be available on statesboroherald.com.
“Of course, we'll still have a very strong daily newspaper and other print products. And we have gone heavily into video with our sports shows and Studio Statesboro,” Morton said. “We recently launched our daily live news broadcast on BoroLive.com. So an audio portion of the Web site is a natural addition.”
Morton said veteran local news and sports broadcaster Tommy Palmer would help the Herald's audio initiative as both a host of several shows and with advertising sales.
“Tommy is well known and respected for his work on the radio,” Morton said. “We're happy he will be part of our team.”
Palmer is owner of Palmer Sports Media and he produces a variety of radio programming. He is the host and producer for “The Georgia High School Football Scoreboard” every Friday night during football season from 10 p.m. to midnight that airs on 55 radio stations around Georgia. He also produces one-hour preview shows weekly and his “Tommy Palmer's Sports Comment” is fed to 115 stations daily.
Palmer also is excited about the Herald's latest Web initiative.
“There's no question the web offers a ton of options and adding a comprehensive audio element to statesboroherald.com just makes sense,” Palmer said. “It's great to be in on the ground floor of this. There are so many opportunities and we'll have a lot of fun, as well.”
The Herald began work on the audio studio about two months ago, Morton said.
“We're putting the finishing touches on now and installing equipment,” Morton said. “Look for our first show to begin within the next month. And I think it's one our audience will really enjoy.”
Palmer will be the host for the return of “Swap, Buy or Sell,” Morton said.
“Anyone who grew up around here remembers what a hoot it was to listen to that show,” Morton said. “All the characters that called in. All the unusual items people wanted to sell or swap. It'll be a blast to bring it back, with updates made possible by the latest technology, of course.”
“Swap, Buy or Sell” will be broadcast live every weekday around mid-day and then be available on demand anytime on BoroLive.com.
More audio programming is on the way, Morton said, including a live morning show with Statesboro Herald reporter Phil Boyum and a daily sports talk show hosted by Palmer. The morning show is a planned live simulcast in cooperation with local radio station WWNS 1240 AM.
