The Glennville Sweet Onion Festival is celebrating its 48th year of saluting the harvesting of the famous Vidalia Sweet Onion crop on Saturday, May 11.

The event will be held on downtown Barnard Street in Glennville, with no admission fee charged to the festival, which features over a hundred vendors selling crafts and a variety of food and beverages. Festival hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a 10 a.m. parade that will be held on Barnard Street, also.

Dr. Troy Rahn will lead as Grand Marshal and deliver brief remarks at the noon program at the Stage at Barnard. From 12:30-4 p.m., entertainment will include dancers, vocalists, the local high school band and a famous group of cloggers. Activities for children include bouncy houses, interactive games, a petting zoo and a mechanical bull.

Although the festival ends at 5 p.m., come back energized to enjoy the music of the Second Chance Band, with their performance from 9 p.m. until midnight, with no admission charge.

Dance the night away or simply sit and listen to this group from Jesup, known as the South's Premiere Beach and Soul Band.

Of course, you will be able to purchase bags/boxes of Vidalia Sweet Onions as well as fried onion rings and blooming onions, cooked to perfection, among many other food choices.
