A Monticello man died after a Sunday evening crash on Interstate 16 at Highway 301 South.
Joseph E. Edwards, 74, of Sprayberry Road in Monticello, was driving a 2011 Lincoln Towncar on the I-16 exit at Highway 301 South around 7:41 p.m. Sunday, said Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Trooper Jonathan Malone.
Edwards stopped, then pulled into the path of a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Frances Fay Smith, 45, of Brooks Brewton Road in Claxton. Smith's car T-boned Edwards' vehicle, Malone said.
Edwards was trapped, but with the assistance of responding fire department and emergency personnel, he was able to get out of the wreckage. He was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, then airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for surgery, but he later died of his injuries, Malone said.
A passenger in his vehicle, Pat Edwards, 78, also of Sprayberry Court in Monticello, was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment of visible injuries.
Smith and a juvenile passenger in her car were transported to Memorial University Medical Center by vehicle, while a second juvenile passenger was airlifted to Memorial, Malone said.
The accident remains under investigation.
