A bizarre call to Bulloch Central 911 landed a woman in jail after a sheriff’s deputy responded Sunday to her Too Short Road home in Pembroke.
Janice Tabitha Sousa, 34, was charged with unlawful conduct during a 911 call, disorderly conduct and obstruction of officers, according to a Bulloch County Sheriff’s incident report by Deputy Mark Guarino.
Bulloch Central 911 operators notified the sheriff’s office after receiving a call from Sousa, who told them “her husband had been abducted by his parents who were taking him to Screven County … where they were going to force him to commit a burglary,” Guarino wrote in his report.
According to statements 911 operators made to Guarino, Sousa also said her husband’s parents intended to force him to have an affair with another woman. Guarino reported Sousa also made similar calls to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.
When Guarino arrived at the Sousa home, he heard a woman’s voice coming from inside the home, screaming obscenities. When he knocked on the door, Sousa’s husband answered and told him Sousa might have fled the home through the back door.
Passing a living room and kitchen filled with “beer and liquor bottles all over the floor as well as trash and other debris,” Guarino said he also saw spilled beer on the floor and an electric stove burner turned on high with no pot on it.
He turned off the stove and went outside to find Sousa lying facedown in grass and mud. As he spoke to her, she “turned over and began petting a cat who wandered up to her.” He noticed an “overwhelming” odor of alcohol, as well as other signs indicating Sousa was inebriated, he stated in reports.
In spite of her husband being inside, Sousa told him her husband had left the home to see another woman and admitted calling 911 to get help finding him. She told Guarino she had gone outside to urinate and attend to feminine hygiene needs, according to the report.
Then, Sousa’s landlord arrived to see about the disturbance, he said. Sousa began cursing the landlord as well and refused to obey orders to stop, the report says.
Guarino questioned Sousa about a large bruise on her arm, and she said she sustained the bruise while playing with her dogs. Then she admitted her husband had not been abducted and said she caused the mess inside the home by throwing beer and liquor bottles around the house, the report states.
After Guarino informed Sousa she was under arrest for making a false 911 call, she refused to cooperate and would not stand up, remaining seated on the ground while petting her cats, he said.
She eventually stood but continued asking the deputy whether he was going to make her husband come home. After refusing several times, she eventually sat down in the patrol car, according to the report.
However, Sousa began yelling once she was confined to the back seat, the report says.
“She began to kick at the rear passenger door in a very aggressive manner,” Guarino stated in reports.
She calmed down a bit while he photographed the interior and exterior of the home, which showed evidence of a party that took place earlier, he said.
When they arrived at the Bulloch County Jail, Sousa “continued to act in an unruly manner due to her drunken state,” Guarino said. She was uncooperative and argued with Guarino over her arrest, but was eventually booked on the charges, he said.
Sousa was later released on bond, according to jail records.
